Got tix?

Fully booked!

Youth Group w. Red Riders, Friday 5 August;

Bluebottle Kiss w. Matt Handley (ex. Pollyanna), Friday 12 August.

Both gigs at the Northcote Social Club, $12+bf.

I got tickets for Ben and Scott for Youth Group, and for Scott for Bluebottle Kiss. We talked about this at Thommo's party, but it was in the fairly advanced stages of...celebration...so if you have no memory of it, and find you've got something else on, don't worry, I'll sort something out.

Other people should come too! Youth Group would appeal to just about anyone, while Bluebottle Kiss are more of an acquired taste, though definitely one worth acquiring.

The beginning of the end?

Further to our conversation last night about the future of the Age, one telltale sign that maybe things are beginning to slide is when a paper starts getting its information from Wiki-fucking-pedia. I am referring to the "Did you know" section, a little bit of filler opposite the comics:

The Age, Tuesday July 26.
Did you know: Hey Jude is a song attributed to Paul McCartney and John Lennon (though largely the work of McCartney), originally recorded by the Beatles for the self-titled The Beatles album, but released instead as a single. Despite its unusually long length (seven minutes, 12 seconds), it became the Beatles' best-selling single, although they did produce a trimmed down version for US radio due. (sic) Originally titled Hey Jules, the song was written for Lennon's son Julian by McCartney, at a trying time for the Lennon family when John and his first wife, Cynthia, were getting divorced.
Source: Wikipedia.

Note the Wikipedia house style, complete with the half-finished sentence where someone's cut out something they didn't like from what a previous contributor had written.

Don't get me wrong, I think Wikipedia's great. It's a clever use of the internet, and a good quick reference point, especially for quirky little pop culture things that normal encyclopedias wouldn't cover. But I would never reference it in an essay. I think the crucial difference is, I'm happy go on the internet and read whatever crap some anonymous guy has put up on a site, and take it with a grain of salt, because I know it's a free service. That's what you pay for in the price of a newspaper: not for a guarantee that everything you read will be 100% accurate, but at least the assurance that someone is putting their name to it, and will be held responsible if the information turns out to be wrong. Otherwise, they might a well just have:

Did you know: Dogs can't look up.
Source: Some guy in a pub.

OK, I know I'm picking a bit of an easy target here, and I'm sure they take a bit more care with the news and the editorials than they do with the comics page, but still, I figure, even crap can be done well. It's not even a pithy fact. It's just a bunch of stuff. I reckon if you asked anyone who knows anything about the Beatles (i.e. just about everyone) to tell you what they know about the song Hey Jude, they'd give you pretty much what is written there: that it is a very popular, very long song, which Paul originally wrote as Hey Jules, because blah blah blah.

Russian Doll News

With the PM in the UK, for once all the Australian TV networks have journos in London, yet still I'm watching Channel Ten broadcasting CNN broadcasting ITV - no, that's not a typo.

Channels Seven and Nine are showing Sky - oh, look, there is Paul Bongiorno from Channel Ten in shot getting ready for the press conference at Downing Street. Well, I guess if Ten aren't using him...

Meanwhile, on the ABC: The Academy Episode Two (The Killing Ground) - a fly on the wall look at life at the Australian Defence Academy. Second series of London attacks? What?

The Music Age

There is so much great new music coming out these days. Just when you thought the Hillsong album was the be all and end all there is actually some great punk rock and emo cd’s that have come to light in the last monthish (it’s a word).

Here is a run down on some of the great stuff that has been coming out and delaying the release of THE 2005 as more and more new songs get added. I am going to have to put my foot down at some stage

ANBERLIN – NEVER TAKE FRIENDSHIP PERSONAL
Rock / Emo

DROPKICK MURPHYS – THE WARRIORS CODE
Punk

COLDPLAY – X & Y
Soft Brit Pop

FALL OUT BOY – FROM UNDER THE CORK TREE
Punk Rock / Emo

FINCH – SAY HELLO TO SUNSHINE
Post Hardcore / Screamo

FOO FIGHTERS – IN YOUR HONOR
Rock

FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND – HOURS
Emocore

HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW – LIFE IN DREAMING
Emocore

MAE – THE EVERGLOW
Emo Pop

NO USE FOR A NAME – KEEP THEM CONFUSED
Punk

THE ACADEMY IS.. – ALMOST HERE
Punk Rock / Emo

THE ALL AMERICAN REJECTS – MOVE ALONG
Emo Pop

THE STARTING LINE – BASED ON A TRUE STORY
Punk Rock / Emo

YOUTH GROUP – SKELETON JAR
Soft Indie

And with Youth Group may I say a well done for this melbourne band who were recently signed to EPITAPH one of the big rock labels in the states (Dropkick murphys, pennywise etc).

Needless to say I’m having a hard time keeping up with all this guff. Every time I pick up my IPOD is a mini crisis of over choice.

God reigns even the ARIA charts

WTF! First we have federal ministers preaching at the opening night of the Hillsong Annual Conference and now, before you can say, "OMG, that's so EVANGELISTIC!" the new album from the Hillsong Church - God He Reigns - debuts at number two on the ARIA charts.

It's a full on Hillsong takeover. The Foo (you know, those Fighters) are the only reason God isn't in top spot.

Australia is loving Jesus something chronic right now, and God knows I love a good bandwagon, so I'm jumping on board.
I don't know about you, but I'm already listening to 89.9 Light FM - "Thanks Light FM! I'm loving your easy blend of Good Friends, Great Music and a Message of Hope. I'm going to go straight out and buy a bible!"

You know, I could even become an evangelist, and then, well, not even the sky's the limit!

Katrina's Engagement Party

I spoke to that crazy girl Katrina earlier tonight. Can you believe she is actually getting married?!

The engagement party (for which I believe Scotto has some unaddressed invitations carrying the wrong details - aka useless paper) is absolutely definitely being held on Friday July 29 at Katrina's place.

Here are some of the details as only our lovely motorcross biker Katrina could describe them:

um what ever time is fine after you finnish work it's just going to be casual since it's at my house

oh and we are providing Snacks, Pizza and Soft drink and it's BYO alcohol you are also welcome to bring a sleeping bag and stay the night! I'm hoping some people will

Yeah it will be got a few movies and stuff so who ever stays it will prob turn into a movie night till morning....I will ahve Grind (awesome movie you boys would love it!) 28days later and the forgotten

Yeah I'm really looking forward to catching up with everyone! Ok got to go now. See ya later. If you speak to anyone let them know for me ok see ya!

Done.

On an unrelated note, a quote for you to add to your list of reasons for not watching Big Brother -

Vesna: angry "I am sick of the farting in the face!"
Christie: genuinely surprised "Oh, you want me to stop that?"

Ads that aren’t Ads

I’m sure everyone has been witness at some point to these ridiculous lies and misgivings.

Marketing and advertising has got to such a point where creative ads are dieing.

Like the creative and awesome ad for the mobile phones where the guy throws the paper back at the paperboy and knocks him off his bike (Gold). Instead we have pseudo infomercials.

I speak of course of BRAND POWER and ZOOT REVIEW (spoke in annoying whispered voice). I know I certainly don't give a fuck what new and exciting kitchen sponge a D grade celebrity like Sophie Formica has chosen to pollute her britches over.

Buchanan Group! You got some shplaining to do!
